Background

The Janet & Rupert Banton Foundation was founded to foster a culture of upward mobility, self-actualization, and excellence. This will be achieved by supporting the academic advancement of students from communities in and around St. Elizabeth as well as to enhance health and wellness in those same communities. The Foundation’s purpose is to transform the trajectory of the lives of individuals who may otherwise be limited in realizing their full potential. This is driven by the foundation’s members’ belief that both individuals and communities possess the ability to thrive were the gaps in support in some key areas, such as education and health, for its most promising members met. One of the Foundation's primary vehicle to advance its mission is the scholarship program, outlined below. The health and wellness program is still in development.

Aims of the JRBF Scholarship

  1. The JRBF foundation aims to help students accomplish their educational aspirations and to achieve the kinds of actualization that meets individual and community needs.

  2. The Foundation will offer monetary support in the form of scholarships that will be paid directly towards school fees, books, lunch, and/ or transportation.

  3. The dignity of applicants will be handled with discretion and care.

  4. Donor support will be accompanied by a system of transparency or accountability.

Applying for Scholarship

New Applications

Applicants should submit an essay , not more than 300 words stating why they deserve to be awarded.This essay should be submitted by the stated deadline.

Applicants will be subject to an interview. Successful applicants will be informed in writing.

Applications by previous awardees

A new application must be made each year for a new award. Renewal is not automatic.

Students should maintain an average of 75% ( to be discussed )

Students should have no failing grade , nothing less than 50%

Students should have no behavioural infractions

Students should participate in at least one co-curricular activity

Note that all applicants should expect to attend an interview. Successful applicants will be informed in writing.

On-going assessment of successful applicants

Quarterly assessments of the awardees’ performance will be undertaken during the academic period. Awardees falling below the required grade will need to account for the slips in grades. Awardees and parents/ guardians will need to agree to a plan of action for improvement and discuss this with the assigned mentor from the foundation. Next steps will be established during these meetings.

Award administration

A designated scholarship committee will vet and award the scholarship based on agreed criteria. Awards will be made at the discretion of the Committee and can be made conditionally.

Once an award has been made, only the successful applicants will be informed in writing, as well as the conditions of the award will be included.
